False Teaching

Seven Faces of the Enemy

The letters to the seven churches in Revelation are focussed on important aspects of the ongoing struggle between the kingdom of God and the hostile kingdom of Satan. Disciples of Christ should be mindful of the major battle for control over their souls, and take the necessary steps to prevent being spiritually blinded and deceived by the devil. He is the self-declared god of a morally depraved and spiritually confused world, and is determined to keep people away from the Lord Jesus who is the true Saviour and King of the world (2 Cor. 4:4). New methods are continuously being devised in the mysterious depths of the kingdom of darkness to lure people away from the Lord and His Word through false doctrines, thereby causing them to stumble in their spiritual lives and eventually fall under his power. The devil and his co-workers also use a wide variety of hard methods such as violence, persecution and intimidation to enforce their power.

Admonitions by Christ to His Church

Through His letters to the seven churches in Asia Minor the Lord Jesus teaches the entire church on earth how to persevere on the evangelical way of the pure Christian doctrine (Rev. 2 & 3). In His messages He warns against the many deviations from the straight road which are offered to believers through both subtle and glaring deception, as well as the relentless persecution of the truth which the church has faced throughout the centuries. He exhorts us to stand firm by not being forced on a wayward course, thereby ensuring that we finish the race as overcomers. From these short but powerful letters it is obvious that only a minority of believers will be among the overcomers, and this underscores the importance of admonitions against serious deception originating from within and also outside of the church, as well as opposition by a hostile world which lies in the sway of the Evil One. The following are the most important cautions in the seven letters:

Characteristics of Our Time – the Great Falling Away of the Last Days

The Bible sheds light on great changes that will occur in various spheres of life during the last days. From a spiritual point of view there will, on the one hand, be preparations among evangelical Christians to meet the heavenly Bridegroom during His secret coming and to subsequently share with Him in the further revelation of His kingdom (Rev. 5:9-10; 20:6). On the other hand, there will be a process of moral and spiritual falling away among the large number of spiritually deceived people in anticipation of receiving the multireligious prince of peace who is described in the Bible as the Antichrist or the beast (1 John 2:18; Rev. 13:1-2). He will institute a humanistic new world order (reminiscent of the ancient Babylonian Empire) which will be fallen man's deliberate effort to rule himself without God, and specifically also in opposition to God's kingdom (Rev. 13:7).

Spiritual Foundations are being Destroyed

In Psalm 11, King David describes a time when evil people will reject all biblical standards and by violent means obtain control over society. However, the Lord will intervene to save the righteous and judge the perpetrators of evil: “When the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do? The Lord is in His holy temple, the Lord’s throne is in heaven; His eyes behold, His eyelids test the sons of men. The Lord tests the righteous, but the wicked and the one who loves violence His soul hates. Upon the wicked He will rain coals; fire and brimstone and a burning wind shall be the portion of their cup. For the Lord is righteous, He loves righteousness; His countenance beholds the upright” (Ps. 11:3-7; the Amplified Bible says, “... the upright shall behold His face”).

The Worldwide Application of Israel’s Seven Feasts

In Leviticus 23, a series of seven prophetic feasts were given to Israel to be celebrated in anticipation of the coming Messiah and the establishment of His Israel-based world empire. Apart from the seven feasts which are to be celebrated annually in their correct chronological order, this chapter also includes directives on another preparatory Messianic feast, i.e. the weekly Sabbath.

The Crucifixion and Resurrection of Jesus, His Names, the Purpose of the Torah and the Sabbath

At present we are experiencing a widespread resurgence of the Judaising of the Christian faith, reminiscent of first century conditions as described in Acts 15 and the epistle to the Galatians. This theological approach comprises a merging of Old and New Testament tenets, and is commonly referred to as Christian Judaism or the Hebrew Roots Movement.
The driving force of this movement is a concerted effort to emphasise the Jewishness of Jesus: not only culturally and linguistically but also in a religious context as a Torah keeping and Sabbath observing rabbi. Their extreme bias is evident from the fact that they:

The Role of Pornography in the Global Slide into Immorality

The viewing of pornographic photos and video clips on the Internet and cell phones is a rapidly increasing phenomenon across the globe, and has become an addictive habit in the lives of millions of people. Members of all social and economic classes are involved in this practice, from adolescents to the elderly.
Great concern is expressed in articles on a number of websites over the rapid increase of pornography viewing. Some of these websites are Christian and others of a non-religious nature, but they are all committed to the upholding of moral values in society. Exposure to pornography does not only have religious consequences, but also impact victim’s lives socially and psychologically.

Not a Kingdom Now

It is of the greatest importance that Christians should expect a future kingdom – not a kingdom now, during the church dispensation. One of the very serious forms of deception, which the Christian church worldwide is exposed to, emanates from wrongly interpreted promises and commands that we should establish a visible kingdom here and now. An orientation of this nature is the breeding-ground for spiritual deception since it offers Satan’s alternate kingdom the opportunity of holding out to believers something else than that which the Bible promises us for the present dispensation: a different faith, a different way of life, a different status, a different world, and ultimately a different Christ and a different kingdom.

Angus Buchan: Evangelist or Revivalist?

Angus Buchan is an evangelist and not a revivalist. An evangelist is involved with basic or first phase evangelism and usually addresses a particular group of people only once, or perhaps a few times during a weekend rally. After his listeners have indicated that they accepted Christ as Saviour, he regards his duty as done and then moves on to his next appointment.
